The Blessed One

I am a second year resident at the PGI, just after completing my post graduation. There is this young boy, a student of class-X, in our ward, the other sibling being a sister. He had severe bone aches and has been diagnosed to have a type of non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Adriamycin- the most effective drug in the multi agent chemotherapy regimen is scarcely available and is relatively expensive. The year is 1986, not many patients with lymphomas survive. We have an onerous task of arranging transfusions, medications and maintaining records single handedly besides everything else. A lady from Red cross is helpful in donating the drugs and somehow we complete the recommended six cycles for this young boy. He comes to the OPD walking with a care, relatively pain free, still apprehensive, for a couple of visits and then I lose track.

Fast forward 10 years, 1996 I get off the Shatabdi train from Delhi to Kalka at Chandigarh station. A young man walks up to me, smiling and addressing me with my maiden name I am at a loss and do not recognize this person, full of confidence and life.

He has trained as an engineer, working in Delhi and had recognized me from his past. My eyes are filled with tears of joy as I relive his journey and I thank the providence for having given me a glimpse of HIS grace and healing.
